How we separated the picks
Chrome's move to Manifest V3 retired the original uBlock Origin there, and every pick here is a current MV3 extension. Blockers differ less in raw filter lists than in their defaults, how much page access they ask for, and how much control they hand you. We took default behavior and feature sets from each developer's documentation, and adoption, ratings, upkeep, and data disclosures from the live Chrome Web Store listings, checked October 12, 2026.

uBlock Origin Lite
Declarative filtering from the uBlock Origin developer, free and open source, with a default mode that needs no page-reading permissions.

AdGuard AdBlocker
User rules, custom filter lists, and a manual element blocker, all free and open source; aggressive rules can break the odd page.

Ghostery
Blocks ads, trackers, and cookie pop-ups while showing which trackers each page tried to load.

AdBlock
The most-installed blocker on the store; Acceptable Ads is on by default and can be turned off in its settings.

Adblock Plus
The original Acceptable Ads blocker from eyeo, free with an optional Premium tier; switch off Acceptable Ads to block every ad.
