What Windscribe is

The extension proxies Chrome traffic through Windscribe locations and adds blocking for ads, social trackers, cookie banners, and tracking parameters, plus WebRTC, location, and timezone spoofing. A Smokewall option blocks browser traffic if the proxy drops; Pro removes the data cap and opens more locations.

Feature coverage

  • Browser proxy with location spoofing
  • Ad, tracker, and cookie-banner blocking
  • Smokewall to stop traffic if the proxy drops

What stands out

  • Strong rating on a large sample
  • Free plan without payment details
  • Updated August 2026

Tradeoffs to know

  • Free plan capped at 10 GB a month
  • Protects browser traffic only
  • Bundled blockers can overlap another blocker

Is Windscribe safe to use?

Windscribe is a reasonable choice for browser privacy: a strong rating on a large sample, a privacy policy that rules out logging visited sites or source IP addresses, and only authentication information disclosed. Its access is broad because it proxies and filters all browser traffic, and that protection ends at the browser.

Page access Broad

Requests page-content access across sites. Broad access is not itself a red flag — the question is whether the job justifies the reach, and whether the publisher's record earns it.

Proxying all browser requests and blocking page elements require access across every site, which is the scope of the job. Windscribe says only browser traffic is rerouted when you connect in the extension; anything outside the browser uses your normal IP address unless its desktop app is also connected.

Store-disclosed data

  • Authentication information

The listing names only authentication information, reflecting the account sign-in. Windscribe's privacy policy says it keeps total bandwidth for a 30-day period and a last-activity timestamp, but not session history, source IP addresses, or sites visited; an email address is optional, though it raises the free allowance.

Does the Windscribe extension protect apps outside Chrome?

No. Windscribe's knowledge base says that if you connect only in the extension, only browser traffic is rerouted, and anything outside the browser uses your personal IP address. Its desktop app is the option for device-wide coverage.

How much does Windscribe's free plan include?

Windscribe says the free plan gives 10 GB a month with a confirmed email address, or 2 GB without one. Pro removes the cap, and Build-A-Plan charges per location.

Does Windscribe log what I browse?

Its privacy policy says it does not store session history, source IP addresses, or visited sites, and keeps only total bandwidth over 30 days and a last-activity timestamp to enforce plan limits.
